Biographical/Historical note

Nazi Germany invaded Greece in April 1941, and Thessalonike (Salonica) was part of the occupied zone. Leaders of Salonica's Jewish community were arrested, homes and properties were immediately confiscated, and the community's cultural possessions were plundered. In February 1943, German authorities established two ghettos, and between March and August 1943, 45,000 Jewish citizens of Salonica were deported to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where most perished. The Jewish community of Salonica was devastated during the Holocaust. Its population of 50,000, pre-war, was reduced to 2000 after the war ended.
