Biographical/Historical note
Camp Westerbork was a transit camp in the Netherlands, originally established in 1939 by Dutch authorities to house illegal Jewish emigrants. After the invasion of the Netherlands by the Nazis, the camp became a transport camp. From July 1942 until September 1944, the Germans transported over 97,000 Jews to concentration camps in the east, with the vast majority sent to death camps Auschwitz and Sobibor. When Canadian troops liberated Camp Westerbork on April 12, 1945, there were 876 prisoners remaining.
Scope and Contents note
Collection comprises 18 issues of the the newsletter of post-liberation Camp Westerbork, in the Netherlands. The first issue in the collection is Issue 7, dated 1945 April 24; the last is Issue 26, dated 1945 June 1.
De Westerborker was the newsletter of Camp Westerbork and was published after the liberation of the camp on April 12, 1945. The newsletter reported on daily concerns, such as medical staff changes, language courses, sports, as well as reproducing reports from the BBC on the successes of the Allies against the Nazi forces.
Issue No. 7 includes reports on the advance of the Allied troops through Germany, destruction in Berlin, the retreat of Hitler to Berlin, as well as the approach of Soviet troops in Potsdam. Another issue includes reproduction of the national anthems of the Netherlands, France, Great Britain and the USSR, as well as the words to Hatikvah, in Hebrew and transliterated into Dutch. Other issues include a column on Jews in Palestine and around the world (Joden in Palestina en Elders in de Wereld)
Issue No. 22 reports that because of the gradual liquidation of Westerbork camp and a lack of important war news, De Westerborker would be published to report on important alerts or bulletins. The last issue in the collection is Issue No. 26, dated 1945 June 1.
