- The collection is comprised of a single item. Historical Note
Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) was the headquarters of the Commander of Allied forces in northwest Europe, from late 1943 until the end of World War II. After the surrender of Germany, SHAEF was dissolved on July 14, 1945 and, as concerned United States forces, was replaced by United States Forces, European Theater (USFET).
Scope and Contents note
The manual, labelled as "restricted" and stamped as "declassified" was published on May 12, 1945 under the authority of the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Expeditionary Force. The objective of the manual is to describe how Allied occupation forces were to take control of information services in Germany. Control of information services was meant to facilitate the military occupation of Germany. Information services as defined by the manual include press, news agencies, publications, posters, radio broadcasting and wired radio transmission, television, film, mechanical and electrical records, opera, musical and theaterical performances, and other public entertainment. The manual documents policies by the Allied occupation forces in Germany after its defeat at the end of the World War II, and provides insight into the importance placed on controlling information dissemination.
The manual provides English/German glossaries of terms related to press and publication, radio and film, theater and music control. An appendix describes control of information under the Nazi regime.
